Despite our tiredness from vintage, we were delighted overnight to receive the gong for Australia's Top Barbera at a recent Wine Wise varietal tasting in Canberra. The 2023 epitomises the forging of old and new that Mario & I have embarked upon together, a stylistic development using 50% carbonic maceration to achieve brightness and medium weight without sacrificing the varietal And with our 2025 carbonic portions sealed with CO2 for almost two weeks now, we're excited about the future this hardy variety has in our vineyards.
With over 30 Australian iterations tasted, here's what the tasting panel, headed by Lester Jesberg, had to say:
"Deep colour with a purple edge. Rich red plums show out on the nose together with hints of bramble. It’s a powerful, strongly varietal, wine of considerable depth, balanced by fine, persistent tannins and fresh acidity. ★★★★★"
