A Dynamic Father / Daughter Duo
Spanning decades of expertise and a rich familial legacy, the Marson name is synonymous with the artistry of winemaking in Australia. Mario Marson, the humble founder of Vinea Marson, collaborates seamlessly with his prodigious daughter, Madeleine, combining tradition and innovation in every bottle they create together.
Mario Marson
With more than 40 years’ spent working in the Yarra Valley & Heathcote, Mario Marson is one of Australia’s most experienced winemakers & viticulturists. Winemaking had long been a tradition in the Marson family, from the suburban Melbourne backyard to the family farm in Friuli that Mario first visited as a child. Mario pursued his passion for wine, gaining qualifications in Agricultural & Wine Sciences from LaTrobe University & Charles Sturt University.
For 17 years Mario was winemaker & viticulturalist at the renowned Mount Mary, working alongside the late Dr John Middleton. A formative experience, these years gave Mario a valuable understanding of both the technical & creative skills required to produce premium wine.
Mario sees the education of the winemaker as an ongoing pursuit, cultivating this not only in his own career but at Vinea Marson more broadly. Regular trips to Piedmont, Tuscany & Friuli alongside vintages with Paolo de Marchi at Isole e Olena and Lessona, and in Burgundy at Domaine de la Pousse D'Or have refined his approach to viticulture and winemaking. Such experiences have proven invaluable in the development of Mario's unique vision, comfort in making multiclonal and multiblend wines, ultimately crafting some of Australia's most distinctive Italian varietal wines.
Next Generation - Madeleine Marson
Madeleine Marson is an emerging winemaker, bringing a strong pedigree in research & an holistic approach to winemaking & viticulture at Vinea Marson. Instrumental in establishing the family’s award-winning Cellar Door, Madeleine turned her attention to the winery in 2017, completing a vintage in the Yarra Valley before returning to pursue her winemaking heritage at Vinea Marson.
Madeleine is completing a Bachelor of Wine Science & is passionate about sustainability & growing Italian varieties in a changing climate. In 2023 Madeleine undertook research in this area through Montalcino & Chianti as the Victorian Wine Show travel scholar, before completing the 2023 vintage under Paolo de Marchi at Isole e Olena. A recent Young Farmer Scholar, she is passionate about undertaking projects that improve the health and wellbeing of the vineyard's soils.
