Merit - Real Review Wine Classification of Australia

Vinea Marson’s raison d’être and the catalyst for winemaker Mario Marson's departure from the Yarra Valley for Heathcote’s red soils, sangiovese has become central to our story, finding a natural and abundant home in the vineyards of our estate at the foot of the Mount Camel Range. With some 12 clones planted in 2000 and 2001, Sangiovese's suitability in our Sotto vineyard and the region more broadly reveals itself most fully in warm, dry seasons, such as this one. Its autumn ripening leads to healthier fruit thanks to more even ripening and the slowly degradation of the variety's natural acidity.

TASTING NOTES
Red garnet in colour with a darker fruit profile on the nose than in other vintages – bramble fruit alongside the traditional – liqueur cherries, alongside a hint of milk chocolate and vanilla & spicy oak. The Italianate tradition continues on the palate, ripe red cherries are prominent alongside Italian savouriness of dried herbs, especially sage. The underlying core of rich fruits is followed by firm, slightly drying tannins. A wine of great length with a touch more rusticity compared with the 2021 vintage.

CELLARING
A wine to enjoy now or age for 10+ years.

FOOD MATCH
With a touch more power & rusticity than in other vintages, the 2020 Sangiovese matches well with a variety of dishes, especially those of the protein-rich variety. Enjoy with tagliatelle with a rich ragu or chicken cacciatore.
